I was challenged to demonstrate the entire manufacturing process for a part, from initial project creation all the way through final documentation using the TopSolid 7 platform. So, this series of videos walks you through the completion of that challenge and demonstrates how TopSolid 7, allows users to design for manufacturability. In short, how TopSolid simplifies your manufacturing process.
After completing this challenge and making the resulting series of videos available to you, I decided to extend the challenge. To that end, we created the Program Your Part Challenge in which I invite you to challenge me with your part and/or manufacturing challenges.
Although the part I am using for this series of demonstrations is a fairly simple bracket, it does present its own challenges.
So, let’s dive right in. For those of you not familiar with the TopSolid 7 platform, we are a fully functional PDM platform out of the box. So, when I start a new project, the new project is a “container” that will hold all of the information that goes with this manufacturing process. Because TopSolid 7 is a PDM-based platform, much of what I can put in this project’s “container” include rules, profiles, toolpaths, and other work I have created for other projects. The PDM foundation that TopSolid 7 is built on is critical to build manufacturing and organizational efficiency. In fact, efficiency and project quality build over time as with each project your entire organization accumulates more knowledge and creates additional elements that allow you to manage the next project more quickly, more accurately and with a higher quality end result.
As I mentioned, the part I will complete over the course of these video demonstrations is a fairly simple bracket. It is a high-production part that I need to model based on drawings my customer provided in a PDF document format.
TopSolid makes quick and accurate modeling easy – as it should be. A few modeling efficiencies highlighted within this video include:
- Making holes symmetrical on the fly with a simple right-button mouse click rather than having to go through complex menu structures
- Efficient application of fillets on multiple corners of the piece at one time
- TopSolid 7 allows me to apply a drilling – copying it – elsewhere on the part rather than having to recreate it
- The ability to do needed math right in the driving dimension and TopSolid remembers the created equation
- Thickened tool which allows me to create and save a thickened profile on the fly
