Getting Started: Basic 2d Mill Tutorial

In this TopSolid Getting Started video tutorial series, you will be introduced step by step to the basics of how to create tool path for a basic 2d mill part.  This will include:

  • A review of the basic TopSolid settings used to create this tutorial
  • Importation of the tutorial project
  • Step by step videos to machine the part through completion
  • How to use Verify
  • Post processing
  • Creation of setup sheets

The goal of this tutorial is to help new users of TopSolid get up and running with our solution quickly and efficiently.

This tutorial does not fully explain each option that is used. Instead it shows you the basics so that you can begin to fully explore what TopSolid’Cam can do for you.

In order to use this tutorial, you will need to download the tutorial assets.  Below are a couple of links that you can use. You can download just the project file with the Parasolid file.  Or you can download the project file, with the Parasolid file and a copy of all of the videos that go with the tutorial.  The second option is quite the large download. But with this download, you don’t need to have web access to watch the videos.  The choice is yours.

After you have downloaded the project, please proceed to watching the videos. Again, if you downloaded the project with the videos, you can watch them from inside of TopSolid. Otherwise, the videos for this tutorial are as follows.

TopSolid Cam 2d Mill Basic-Before you Start

In this video, you will see how to modify some of the settings within TopSolid. It is important to check your settings so that they match the settings used in this tutorial. If you don’t, TopSolid may react differently from what you see in the video. These differences will only be things like default values, unit of measure and such.  However, for the best experience possible with this tutorial, we recommend you to modify your settings to match ours.

Getting Started: Creating a drafting document and dimensioning

LogoTopSolidTopSolid drafting sampleIn this getting started video tutorial, you will be introduced to some basic concepts around the creation of 2d drafting files.  First let’s discuss what a drafting document is.  A TopSolid drafting document is a document where we project the 3d data created in TopSolid into a 2d format.  It is in a drafting document where you will add your dimensions, GD & T and other detailing types of elements.

This tutorial contains 4 videos that will walk you through some basic concepts on the creation of 2d drafting documents..

In this first video, you will learn how to create a basic drafting document that contains 3 standard views of your part.  You will also learn how to set and customize the origin point of the view.

Step 1 – Create your views

In the next video, you will learn how to add an Origin Symbol to your drafting views. You will also be shown a few different ways of adding and working with Composite dimensions. Composite dimensions allow you to quickly add several styles of dimensions to your view from a common origin point.  This is heavily used in the Tool and Die industries.

Import a file with conversion into a TopSolid Project

In this getting started tutorial, you will be shown how to use a command called “Import file with conversion”. This command let’s you import a file into the TopSolid project and convert it at the same time. There are two methods you can use to import data this way. One is to use the contextual menu. The other is to use simple windows drag-n-drop.

Import a file without conversion into a TopSolid 7 Project

In this getting started tutorial, you will be shown how to use a command called “Import file without conversion”. This command let’s you import a file but not convert it. The reason you would do this is to keep a copy of your customers original data within the TopSolid project. There are two methods you can use to import data this way. One is to use the contextual menu. The other is to use simple windows drag-n-drop. Finally you will also be shown how to convert the data once it has been imported as a copy.

TopSolid 7 – Can programming a Mazak Quick Turn 200m really be this easy?

Let’s be honest…we’re all busy.  We’re all busy working to find little ways to increase efficiency.  Little ways to maybe turn a tiny profit into a slightly larger profit.  Or in some cases, just outright looking for the holy grail solution to solve all of our problems.  In my case, I am always looking to help you, our customers become better at what you do.  After all…that’s my job.

In this video series, I thought it would interesting to show you some fundamentals about programming basic turning and simple milling on a Mazak Quick Turn 200M machine.  This is a great machine. However, there are limits to the machine. This machine for example does allow live tooling, but it has no Y axis.  So in this case to do any milling you need to know how to do C axis programming.  I thought that this part would be a great sample to show how easy it really is to program a machine like this off line.

Hi again!  This video tutorial will introduce you to the basics of building a bottom-up assembly within TopSolid 7.  The tutorial is broken into 12 videos.  The goal in each video is to either teach you one or two new things about working with assemblies in TopSolid 7, or it will give you the ability to practice what you have already learned.
